Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are modes of persuasion used to convince audiences. They are also referred to as the three artistic proofs Aristotle coined the termsand are all represented by Greek words. An author would use ethos to show to his audience that he is a credible source and is worth listening to.
Of the modes of persuasion furnished by the spoken word there are three kinds. The first kind depends on the personal character of the speaker [ethos]; the second on putting the audience into a certain frame of mind [pathos]; the third on the proof, or apparent proof, provided by the words of the speech itself [logos]. The intent of the speaker is to appear credible.
Logos is a way of arguing calmly and carefully, using reason alone and not relying on the emotions. We might say that logos comes from the mind, while pathos comes from the heart. Math is a subject entirely made up of logos. Emotions and personal opinions are not important — all that matters is figuring out the logical truth.
Viewed in context, ethos, pathos, and logos are three pillars to the same building. While legal argument appropriately prefers arguments grounded in logic, the practical need to convey a complete message means that there is a perfectly appropriate role for ethos and pathos as well. All three — ethos, pathos, and logos — can be engaged in ways that are appropriate and ways that are fallacious.
In life, we are often called upon to be persuasive. Sometimes we give formal presentations to propose new ideas to our boss; sometimes we create fliers to encourage people to come to a local concert; and sometimes we simply need to convince our neighbor that sharing the cost of a fence is worth the investment. Whatever the reason, being persuasive is a critical part of life if we want things to work out in our favor.
