Breast reconstruction is the rebuilding of a breastusually in women. It involves using autologous tissue or prosthetic material to construct a natural-looking breast. Often this includes the reformation of a natural-looking areola and nipple. This procedure involves the use of implants or tissue taken from other parts of the woman's body.
Advances in implantable biologic and synthetic products over the last decade have enabled surgeons to replace traditional submuscular implant-based breast reconstruction techniques with a prepectoral or muscle-sparing technique. Prepectoral breast reconstruction is becoming increasingly popular among surgeons and patients due to the preservation of normal chest wall anatomy, with the restoration of body image with minimal morbidity. In this article, we have described a guide to prepectoral or muscle-sparing breast reconstruction with a particular emphasis on patient selection, technique and postoperative outcomes.

In recent years, acellular dermal matrix ADM products have increasingly been utilized in breast reconstruction in order to protect the implant from exposure under a thin mastectomy skin flap while also allowing better control of the inframammary fold and, therefore, a better cosmetic result. In current clinical practice, cost is a factor in considering procedures and adjunct products.

In breast reconstruction, it is used as a filler for lumpectomy defects and can be used to create the inferolateral portion of the tissue expander pocket or implant pocket in postmastectomy patients. This is important as misdiagnosis can often lead to unnecessary surgical intervention.
