The International Institute for Asian Studies IIAS was established in in Leiden and Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to operate as an autonomous national and international organisation promoting academic engagements with and in rather than on Asia. Originally supported by a consortium of Dutch universities, IIAS operates as a transregional programme facilitating different intellectual endeavours pertaining to Asia and Asian studies. It is through this university that it receives its core funding from the Dutch Ministry of Education.

IIAS is a global humanities and social sciences research institute and knowledge exchange platform that supports programmes which engage Asian and other international partners. IIAS aims to contribute to a better and more integrated understanding of present-day Asian realities as well as to rethink 'Asian Studies' in a changing global context. IIAS works to encourage dialogue and link expertise, involving scholars and other experts from all around the world in its activities.
ICAS attracts participants from over 75 countries to engage in global dialogues on Asia that transcend boundaries between academic disciplines and geographic areas. The historic city of Leiden is home to one of the oldest universities, Leiden University, and several of the most renowned Asia research centers. Events will include: panels and roundtable discussions, keynote speeches, craft exhibitions, a film and documentary festival and the second Asian Studies Book Fair.
