Trans folks have received major media attention in the last decade, but transgender identities are far from a modern phenomenon. To ring in the new year, I decided to pull up years worth of songs by and about gender-nonconforming people. Some of these were written and performed by folks who might have identified as queer or GNC themselves, while others are by people who were adamantly not part of the queer community including Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam.
The year-old Canadian's victory was controversial in some quarters because she is a transgender woman competing in female sport, albeit in the year-old category. Jen Wagner-Assali, who finished third, called it "unfair" and wants cycling's international governing body to change its rules. Others have said further examples may "threaten" the participation of women in sport - a view described as "sensationalist" by transgender racing driver Charlie Martin, and as "transphobic" by McKinnon.
Bodies arrive differently in every virtual reality experience. Sometimes the player is a pair of floating hands holding a palette and a brush. Other times, a player drops into an entirely new body, one they might never have chosen for themselves.
Photo by Alyza Enriquez. When I was 10 years old, I was a boy that looked like a girl. My something neighbor used to congratulate my mother on what a beautiful young lady I was becoming. A person's internal sense of being male, female or something else is their gender identity.
Transitioning is when a person decides to start presenting and living as their authentic gender identity, rather than what they were prescribed physically at birth. It's a conflicting time in transgender people's lives, as they experience the euphoria of finally getting to be themselves, along with the negative social and financial impacts of the process. Support from friends, family, employers, coworkers, and the government has a huge impact on the physical and emotional effects of transitioning.

Next Thursday, I will get a vagina. The procedure will last around six hours, and I will be in recovery for at least three months. Until the day I die, my body will regard the vagina as a wound; as a result, it will require regular, painful attention to maintain. This is what I want, but there is no guarantee it will make me happier.
Health and wellness touch each of us differently. And it almost always has to do with my body. I was assigned female at birth, but when I hit my teen years, I became increasingly uncomfortable in my own skin.
