The finding comes from the third analysis of the Herceptin Adjuvant HERA triala large multicenter study that compared outcomes in patients randomly assigned to receive standard chemotherapy followed by trastuzumab with those in patients randomly assigned to receive chemotherapy alone the observation group. The 4-year follow-up results were reported February 25,in Lancet Oncology. Luca Gianni, M.

Some breast and stomach cancers have large amounts of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 HER2. They are called HER2 positive cancers. HER2 makes the cancer cells grow and divide.
If you have HER2-positive breast cancer, your oncology team will prescribe a combination of anticancer drugs. This treatment regimen will likely include a few different chemotherapy drugs as well as therapy that specifically targets HER2-positive breast cancers. Chemotherapy, or chemo, is the use of medicines to kill cancer cells and stop new ones from growing.
By Alice Goodman December 10, Advertisement. Recent studies have more clearly defined the role of pertuzumab Perjeta and neratinib Nerlynx. A question currently on the table is the optimal duration of trastuzumab.
Cancer cells grow in an uncontrolled fashion. Herceptin works on the surface of the cancer cell by blocking the chemical signals that can stimulate this uncontrolled growth. Genes are like instruction manuals that tell each cell of your body how to grow, what kind of cell to become, and how to behave.
Many of the drugs used to treat early and locally advanced breast cancer are different from those used to treat metastatic breast cancer. Figure 5. Brand name.
In addition to chemotherapy and hormone therapythere are newer, more effective treatments that can attack specific breast cancer cells without harming normal cells. Currently, these targeted methods are commonly used in combination with traditional chemotherapy. However, targeted drugs often have less severe side effects than standard chemotherapy drugs. How do breast cancer targeted therapies work?
This section discusses HER2-targeted therapies for early and locally advanced breast cancer. Learn about HER2-targeted therapies for metastatic breast cancer also called advanced or stage IV breast cancer. Some breast cancers have high amounts of a protein called HER2 on the surface of the cancer cells called HER2-positive breast cancer.
Back to Health A to Z. Herceptin is the brand name of a medicine called trastuzumab. Herceptin can help control the growth of cancer cells that contain high amounts of HER2 human epidermal growth factor receptor 2. But high levels of HER2 are found in some types of breast, oesophageal and stomach cancer, which helps the cancer cells grow and survive.
