By Helaine Clare TZ. Live in an old home and wondering how to clean stone floors? Stone floor tiles can lose their sparkle over time, and the grout can discolour.
Slate floors are well known for their beauty and durability, but the sealers and waxes applied to them can darken their appearance or create dirty-looking spots over time. Dirt becomes trapped in the sealer if it s waxed over. Sometimes parts of the floor become worn looking, or a powdery substance develops on the surface.
The benefits of applying a high quality floor sealer system to a floor are both the protection and the enhancement of what is a valuable asset. Floors are exposed to unrelenting abrasion from foot and trolley traffic, spillages and dirt which, without protection, can cause dulling of the floor surface and even wear it away. Once coated with a suitable sealer, the floor is protected from these threats. Furthermore, the surface becomes easy to clean with soil readily washed away, the colours of the floor are enhanced and the floor will have a higher and more even shine.
A limestone floor needs to be occasionally stripped and sealed to ensure that its surface is protected against permanent staining and scratching. Start by removing every movable object off of the limestone floor. If there are carpets, roll them and move them to the sides.

The purpose of stripping a floor is to remove built-up layers of sealer or wax to restore it to its original state, or as close to it as possible. Most commonly, this is done in order to reseal the tiles. You can see how dull the tiles are with a build up of wax polish.
As vinyl and linoleum floors age, waxing helps maintain their shine and protect them from further wear, tears, and scratches. Wood, tile, and epoxy floors may also be waxed. Over time, the layers of wax start to build up, turn yellow with age, and can make the floor look dirty even after you just cleaned it. To remedy this, strip the old wax buildup before waxing again.
Many people take a look at their textured stone or tile floor and see that it is dirty. Well that may not always be the case. Just because your stone or tile floor looks dirty or dingy, does not necessarily mean that simple cleaning is the answer.
