Since the American Psychological Association APA took homosexuality off the books as a psychological disorder inthe debate over reparative therapy—an attempt to change someone's sexual orientation to heterosexuality—has continued with little rigorous research. Inthe APA adopted a resolution stating that mental health professionals should avoid telling clients that they can change their sexual orientation. Many question the ethics of treating someone for a condition which is not considered a disorder and posit that reparative therapy risks traumatizing the patient.

For most of the twentieth century, homosexuals were considered mentally ill by the psychiatric profession. This diagnosis was due entirely to prejudice and was not backed by legitimate science. Studies on homosexuality were poorly conceived, culturally biased and often used institutionalized mental patients as study subjects. After reviewing the evidence, in the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual DSMwhich is its list of mental disorders.
Together we represent more than half a century of experience, so few people are more knowledgeable about the ineffectiveness and harm of conversion therapy. We know first-hand the terrible emotional and spiritual damage it can cause, especially for LGBT youth. We know better now.
The ex-gay movement consists of individuals and organizations that encourage people to refrain from entering or pursuing same-sex relationshipseliminate homosexual desires and to develop heterosexual desires, or to enter into a heterosexual relationship. It relies on the involvement of individuals who formerly identified themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual but no longer do; these individuals may either claim that they have eliminated their attraction to the same sex altogether or simply that they abstain from acting on such attraction. There have been various scandals related to this movement, including some self-claimed ex-gays  having been found in same-sex relationships despite having denied this, as well as controversies over gay minors being forced to go to ex-gay camps against their will, and overt admissions by organizations related to the movement that conversion therapy does not work.
