Movies, television, and even books have kept the cowboy style part of our popular culture for well over a century. Generally valuing function and comfort over aesthetics, our American cowboy is heavily influenced by the Mexican and Spanish vaquero term which were the original cowboys of the past. There are a number of things you can do to adopt the cowboy style as your own.
Theodore Roosevelt A while ago I posted an update about George Washingtonmentioning how he was one of the most badass Presidents in American history. Well contrary to popular belief being a great president isn't just all about cutting British people up with a Dragon Katana and assaulting random unsuspecting Frenchmen. Theodore Roosevelt didn't do any of that and he was still one of the most face-smashing, rough-riding, badass dudes to grace the Oval Office with his awesomeness.
Rarely is it the other way around. The duo is inspired by stuntman Hal Needham and actor Burt Reynolds, who had a long, wild friendship throughout their careers. Needham broke into stunt work by accident: he was pruning trees for a living before enlisting in the military as a paratrooper.
Most of the time, when we think about the Wild Wild West, we think of cowboys and bandits and corrupt sheriffs. Hollywood depicts the west as a crime-filled zone made up of bearded men fighting for their land, searching for gold, or protecting women. But some of the most badass people in the wild west were, in fact, women who rose up and made a name for themselves as some of the best shooters or meanest criminals.
When you think of the stereotypical Wild West individual, what comes to mind? The type of men who would shoot you over a card game and spend their days riding through the vast Western frontier with a gun firmly attached to their hip? Well, those men certainly did exist, but not many people remember how many tough women and Wild West heroines made their marks upon history.
Some people are fans of the Dallas Cowboys. This Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read all the previews so far here.

I now know a lot more about making problematic and harmful comparisons to blackface. Blackface and Redface have very different origins and histories, and are both symbols of ongoing dehumanization and white supremacy…but are not the same. So my true apologies for this post, and I definitely plan to revisit and write more, as well as include these notes on the other early posts where I often made this comparison.
It feels good sitting in the shade beneath it, whiling away an afternoon listening to records, looking up at the light coming through the pale green leaves and smelling the faint scent of citrus. Moving gently across the surface in the breeze is an inflatable killer whale, floating belly up. A lot has changed since then. In a rack near the door sits the copy of Playboy with Marge on the cover.
