Updated: September 7, References. Nude art models have been around since the days of ancient Greece and their work is both difficult and rewarding. If you want to be a nude art model, you have to be comfortable with your body, know how to hold a variety of poses, and understand the proper protocol.
An art model poses, often nude, in front of the class, as students draw them. How do I know? I work as an art model.
Yet these men and women — old and young, all shapes, sizes and ethnicities — whose bodies are exposed from every angle, whose nude images grace my walls, remain unknown to me. I rarely know their names. Who are these people who bare all to a room full of strangers?
All images courtesy of the artists. I've looked out from the bow of a Californian shipwreck like a figurehead and posed nude on horseback in the deserts of Utah. This is just a small sampling of the incredible places my job has taken me in the last two and a half years.
Goya's Nude Maja, confident in her nakedness as she unashamedly gazes out at the viewer, is infamous for her direct confrontation. Rumored to be a portrait of Goya's own mistress, this painting was commissioned for the private boudoir of a wealthy patron, hidden from the public eye. But when discovered, this erotically-charged masterpiece shocked audiences at the time and paved the way for the transgressive, boundary-pushing ethos of Modern Art.

The reputation of the once exalted, still unshakably canonical, Impressionist has fallen on difficult days. His models were often amazed at how little they recognized themselves in pictures that they had posed for. Peculiarly, Renoir did grant the women wonderfully articulated hands, the body part hardest to render convincingly—good for doing things, perhaps around the house.
A figure drawing is a drawing of the human form in any of its various shapes and postures using any of the drawing media. The term can also refer to the act of producing such a drawing. The degree of representation may range from highly detailed, anatomically correct renderings to loose and expressive sketches.
