In Medieval Europeattitudes toward homosexuality varied by era and region. Generally, by at least the twelfth century, homosexuality was considered sodomy and was punishable by death. Before the Medieval period early Romans tolerated alternative sexual practices, such as masturbation in males and females and homosexuality.
Gay men report unique health disparities and service utilization trends compared to their heterosexual peers including a lack of health-care participation which may lead to chronic health conditions. The aim of this study was to examine the association age cohort has on health service utilization among gay men. A sample of self-identified gay men was collected by the San Francisco Department of Public Health.
A subset of these men who have sex with men, or MSM, live lives that are, in all respects other than their occasional homosexual encounters, quite straight and traditionally masculine — they have wives and families, they embrace various masculine norms, and so on. They are able to, in effect, compartmentalize an aspect of their sex lives in a way that prevents it from blurring into or complicating their more public identities. Sociologists are quite interested in this phenomenon because it can tell us a lot about how humans interpret thorny questions of identity and sexual desire and cultural expectations.
The meaning of homosexual identity as shaped by the adult life course is poorly described in the lives of gay men. In particular, the transition from young adulthood to middle age raises questions of how homosexual identity is redefined as gay men alter their participation in gay sexual culture, experience change in sexual desire and activity, and revise broader psychosocial identity as influenced by psychological and socialization processes related to aging. In addition, the HIV epidemic and historical change in social tolerance of homosexuality have shaped the experience of sexual identity among the generation of currently middle-aged gay men in the United States.

Main Ancient Medieval Modern. The following is a paper written in I would change some, perhaps many of the conclusions, and certainly the theoretical approach.
To learn more about why behaviors and identities do not always match, I interviewed 60 rural white men who identify as heterosexual, but have had sex with other men. Social context, I found, plays an important role in mediating the relationship between behavior and identity. My findings have important implications for public health efforts, particularly in rural areas of the country. This is not true, because sexual orientation and sexual identity are different.
For more than 15 years, my scholarly interest has been in collecting and interpreting personal histories of gay men in Australia and in other English-speaking countries including Hong Kong, India, England, New Zealand, and the USA. Long before I began this, my interest in personal histories evolved from the many years I spent meeting and speaking with gay men in bars and clubs and during fleeting or long-term intimate relationships. Reality does not always match the stuff of dreams and while for some coming out can be a wrench, for others it can be an easy transition, depending on their social situation.
